How to fix a corrupted or damaged Master Boot Record
Fdisk Tips Posted by Shawn DesRochers September 3rd, 2007The Master Boot Record contains the partition information for your systems hard drive and determines which partition is bootable. When you first start your computer, it’s the Master Boot record that makes the initial post request and determines the state of your computer and loads the appropriate drives and devices.
If you’re Master Boot record is damaged by a virus or a third party partitioning software on your system. You may receive the following error message “’MBR Corrupt’ and ‘Error loading operating system’.
It’s not uncommon for the Master Boot Record to get damaged, as spyware and viruses are the main culprits.
Fortunate for you its really quiet easy to repair, it just takes a little patients and a few minutes of yout time.
- Use a bootable Floppy for your operating system, if you don’t have one you can download one from here http://www.pcwindowstips.com/windows-boot-disks/
- Place the floppy in you’re A:\ drive and Restart your computer.
- Your computer should pick up the bootable floppy disk and start to load the Utilities. If it doesn’t you may need to adjust your system BIOS to boot to the floppy drive first.
- From the command prompt Run FDISK /MBR
This will replace your Master Boot Record with a new one and you should be able to use your computer.
