Installing the NetBEUI Protocol in Windows XP

When setting up a local area network using Windows XP, you may have noticed that NetBEUI is no longer available as a protocol option. That’s because Microsoft no longer supports the NetBEUI Protocal like previous versions.
However it’s still available on the CD-Rom of Windows XP if you need to use NetBEUI under VALUEADD -> MSFT -> NET -> NETBEUI.
To install NetBEUI
- Copy the nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
- The %SYSTEMROOT% refers to the drive and directory where you installed Windows XP. The default installation is normally C:\WINDOWS
- Copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
- Open the Network connection properties for your local area network and use “Install” button to add NetBEUI protocol.
Most network configuration doesn’t need the NetBEUI Protocol, so only install NetBEUI if you absolutely need it.

netbeui is installed on several windows xp machines, but won’t work. installed it many times on w2k machines and it works as expected (I am LAN admin).

I followed the instructions to load NetBEUI on a XP Home Service pack 2 system, but I got the error “Could not add the requested component. The error is: The device does not exist in the hardware tree” What device? I have a COM1 port. Is this a registry issue?
