I received a request today from one of my readers with an issue concerning Norton System Works, and Windows Live Messenger. They installed Windows Live Messenger over a week ago but when Norton System Works launched the scheduled One Button Checkup it found several errors.

A number of programs rely on a file from Microsoft, called “msvcr80.dll”, however Norton System Works won’t allow permissions to the file. So users are reporting they are recieving the following error message.

C:\Programs\Windows Live\msnmsgr.exe “cannot access a necessary file, “msvcr80.dll”.

Well heres how to fix this little problem!

To fix the error “cannot access a necessary file, “msvcr80.dll”, do the following.

Tip: Never download any dll files from the internet or other websites, either extract it from your Windows XP Installation CD or use Microsofts Website Support to locate the file!

Go to Start -> Search -> Type in the following: msvcr80.dll and search your C: drive.

Once it finds the file msvcr80.dll file, right click it and select copy.

Note: You may recieve the following screen, just click the link “Show the contents of this folder.”

Now double click My ComputerDouble Click C:\ (Local Disk)Double Click the folder Windows – and double click the folder named system32.

Now that you have the system32 file open, right click anywhere inside the system32 folder and select past. This will copy the msvcr80.dll file into the system32 folder.

Now run Nortons One Button Checkup again and your error message should be gone.
