There are many reasons you may want to run chkdisk in Windows XP. Many users use it to check the hard drive and system files for errors. Over time your computer becomes less responsive, slow or maybe even freezes a little or you possibly start getting the END TASK for programs that won’t shut down.

Here is how to run chkdisk in Windows XP

1. Click the start button
2. Right-click “My Computer” and select “Explore”
3. Right-click the hard drive / disk you want to check and select “Properties”
4. In the properties dialog click the tab “Tools”
5. Click “check now”
6. The “checking disk” dialog appears, check both options and click start.
7.  You will probably see a message that chkdsk wants exclusive access to the disk and therefore wants to begin first thing after you restart your computer.
8. Go ahead and clic accept by clicking ok.
9. Now restart your computer.

When the computer restarts you will see the following screen, it will ask you to hit any key to skip the chkdisk of the current drive you have chosen. Just ignore this and let it follow through the operation.

Once your computer completes the chkdisk, it will reboot automaticly.

If it detects no errors, Windows will continue to start to your normal desktop. If there are errors, chkdsk presents a report with what it has done and waits for your confirmation. to repair any errors it found.
