With windows Vista, when viewing a directory, you can configure it to automatically start searching when you type in text, and it will search the folder/directory your currently viewing…

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Select Folder Options
  3. Click on the View tab
  4. Scroll to the bottom
  5. Check Automatically type into the Search Box.

Now when you are in a folder and simply start typing in text, Vista will start a search.
